Guide to the Bloomberg Excel add-in

An excellent guide to the Bloomberg Excel add-in can be found here: Advanced support for using the Bloomberg Excel add-in.

The Excel add-in/API

What is the Excel add-in?

The Bloomberg Excel add-in (API) allows you to pull data from Bloomberg through Excel rather than from the regular Bloomberg terminal interface.  This is very helpful for pulling large sets of data or comparing companies on a variety of factors.

How to use Bloomberg in Excel

Open Excel and follows these steps:

  1. Choose Bloomberg tab
  2. Choose Spreadsheet Builder
  3. Choose the right type of table
  4. Choose Next

Troubleshooting - missing Excel add-in

The Bloomberg Excel add-in works on all seven Bloomberg terminals at the CBS Library Data Lab. It is installed as default. If the add-in is missing in the toolbar (see text above), try this:

1/ If there is an error installing it, run Start > All Programs > Bloomberg > Bloomberg API Diagnostics > Start & Repair. Read more in the guide (link below).

2/ Still not working, try to manually install the Bloomberg Excel add-In. First close all Excel spreadsheets and follow this path: Start > All Programs > Bloomberg > Install Excel Add-In.
